On Jan. 20, 1976 UCSD Chancellor W. D. McElroy appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to work with naval architects Rudolf F. Matzer & Associates to design a 160 ft. research vessel for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The vessel was designed as a replacement for R/V Alexander Agassiz.
